Every so often an artist comes your way who stands out from the crowd. Lyndon Wesley is that artist. A distinctive individual who continues to win enormous respect as a writer, performer and producer. After returning from an Australian tour in 1996 Lyndon ventured out as a solo performer. He has since won numerous songwriting awards, produced three albums and has played support to the likes of Ross Wilson and Mark Seymour.
Raised on the West Australian mission fields, Lyndon developed a deep respect for the Aboriginal people and a keen interest in their culture. Early relationships with young aborigines centred around walkabouts, hunting, making milo-trucks and gings (kind of slingshot), playing doogs (marbles), riding homemade bicycles and of course, playing guitar.
Lyndon's earliest musical memory is, "scratching the brand name off my mother's much loved and well travelled upright piano." Fortunately this incident did not deter Lyndon's parents from purchasing a guitar for his seventh birthday.
With a record collection boasting such greats as Slim Whitman, Nana Maskouri, Pat Boone and The Sound Of Music, much of Lyndon's early influences can be attributed to his parents questionable tastes. But it was as a teenager that Lyndon broke the bonds of such a collection, venturing into a brave new world of rock music, albeit thirty years or more after its incarnation.
After a shaky start on a diet of A-Ha, The Thompson Twins and Feargal Sharkey, Lyndon soon found his feet listening to bands such as Crowded House, U2, The Eagles and Baby Animals.
Having been smitten by songwriting for many years, and many solo acoustic shows later, Lyndon's debut album 'Stupid Adventures', spawned the Lyndon Wesley Band, which promoted the album to local audiences across Melbourne.
Lyndon's music has been featured on local radio and television and his self-funded video clip, Too Late, screened on Rage & MTV. Tracks have also been placed in cable TV shows and DVD.
Lyndon has won many local songwriting awards including "Best Original Song" & "Instrumental" in the Kingston Arts Master Guitar Challenge and twice runner-up in the Ranges Festival Songsmith Award.
While The World Lay Sleeping is Lyndon's superb new offering and arguably his finest work to date. A mostly lush and spacious recording that is described by American label Koolkatmusik as "gorgeous, acoustic guitar-led, dreamily sung pop songs that fall smack dab into the realm of artists like Neil Finn, Crowded House and Elliot Smith". It's hard to imagine tiring of this mini-album as each successive listen reveals something new. Mature, memorable songs that appear to be as instinctive as they are orchestrated. While The World Lay Sleeping really does show what an extraordinary songwriter Lyndon is.
While The World Lay Sleeping is Lyndons current 6 Track EP and is distributed throughout Australia by MGM.
