Notes by Irvin Mayfield:
HBO's The Wire, creator and director David Simon never imagined he would be collaborating
with New Orleans born actor Wendell Pierce long past the finale of the successful cable
television series. Years later, Simon would aptly cast Pierce as a trombone player in the HBO
series Treme, juxtaposed with New Orleans icon Kermit Ruffins playing himself throughout the
entirety of the series. This time around producer Irvin Mayfield rekindles their collaborative
relationship as Pierce insistently tells Ruffins to turn down the music. However, Ruffins does
not oblige, reflecting the countercultural elements found throughout the record and Ruffins’
artistic career.
