Notes by Irvin Mayfield:
The jazz funeral a.k.a jazz processional is unique to New Orleans. Also known as the second
line, jazz parades, like jazz itself, started in the Christian church in late 1800s New Orleans. This
slow, beautiful church song, also known as a dirge, is the first and most heavy portion of the
parade which inevitably explodes into a massive street dance party. Sung by veteran
gospel/jazz vocalist Topsy Chapman, this traditional song captures the spirit of celebrating a
life well-lived.
