All These Years
When I woke up this morning in a Tokyo hotel room
I’d forgotten what the tour guide said we’d do today
But you were already dressed with our schedule in hand
And I remembered making breakfast for you all those summer days
In Ocean City, all you kids always asked for Frosted Flakes
But I knew you loved my dippy eggs the most, with toast
I could have sliced in my sleep

All those years I took care of you, now you’re taking care of me

As we ride this bullet train I read to you from our guidebook
Of where we’ve been and where we’re going on our trip
And I raise my eyebrows, look at you, and say “Isn’t that neat?”
Because I remember sitting on the bed, cradled in your hips
When I was still only in diapers reading Harry the Dirty Dog
Didn’t understand a word, pointing at pictures was all that I could do

All those years you took care of me, now I’ll take care of you

We will wash our hands in water, we will stand before this shrine
We will pray to spirits we have never known
And we know we’ll never see the world the same way again
When the day after tomorrow we fly home

And these years, they are years we will remember
Oh I, I will remember all these years, I’ll remember you
