Shay
SHAY

He wasn’t born like the other kids
Spent every day dealing with Downs Syndrome
He was ignored by the other kids
The only place he felt accepted was home

Shay, run all the way
You’re not alone
Run all the way home

One day we walked past a baseball game
He asked me, “Dad do you think I could play?”
I didn’t want to discourage him
I told him, “Let’s go and see what they say”

One of the kids on the losing team
Gave it some thought and then answered, “OK
We have no chance of winning now
It won’t make a difference if we pick up Shay”

Shay played the outfield and nothing came
But his face was split in his happiest grin
Next inning the picture changed
With every base loaded the bat came to him

The pitcher stepped forward and lobbed the ball
Trying to give Shay a chance to connect
It must have been some kind of miracle
Cause somehow he did, but to little effect

Shay, run all the way
You’re not alone
Run all the way home

The pitcher could easily throw him out
But he aimed for the outfield instead
And as Shay got to second base
The shortstop ran over and said

“Shay, run all the way
You’re not alone
Run all the way home”
