Mike Aiken To Heat Up Country Radio With New Single
PROGRAMMERS LOOK FOR "SUMMERTIME SONG" ON YOUR DESK

Nashville, TN -- Singer/songwriter Mike Aiken brings a hot twangin' number to Country radio today with his latest single, the "gotta ditch the real world" sing-along "Summertime Song." Aiken says with a grin, "It's a fun tune about playing 'hooky' from life. Sometimes you just need to take a break."

Co-written by Aiken and Tim Buppert ("She's Sure Taking It Well," "Another Nine Minutes"), the track literally sizzles with life and features guitar runs by Aiken and the talented Dan Baird (Georgia Satellites). It's the perfect segue from a dreary winter to the brighter days of spring, and programmers will find the tune on their CDX Vol. 567 (track #14) or can access the track digitally via AirplayDirect.

"Summertime Song" is the first single release from Mike's sixth studio album CAPTAINS & COWBOYS, which is due out April 22 on Northwind Records. The Virginia-based troubadour recorded the disc in Nashville with A-list musicians, including Dan Dugmore on pedal steel (James Taylor, Little Big Town), Tammy Rogers on fiddle and mandolin (The SteelDrivers), Michael Webb on accordion, bass, B3 (Poco) and Michael Grando on drums (Todd Snider, Chris Knight).

Aiken is no stranger to Country radio and its audience: he's enjoyed several MusicRow active singles and has toured the U.S. and abroad. He draws inspiration for his songs from his colorful life: from his self-sufficient days farming, raising animals and shoeing horses to 20 years spent sailing and living aboard his sailboat as a licensed USCG captain.

Midwest Record - Review of Captains & Cowboys
MIKE AIKEN/Captains & Cowboys: He doesn't sound anything like John Hartford but Hartford would certainly be proud of this sailing country musician. Opening up his sound for his sixth album, Aiken distills various outlaw spirits of the past into his own mix that he brings in from the cold and shakes some of the genres hallmark hostility off of looking at things as a contemporary outsider that values his independence without telling you to take this job and shove it. Certainly a dandy new vector for Americana.

Mike Aiken Releases Sixth Studio Album CAPTAINS & COWBOYS April 22
Well-Traveled Virginia Troubadour Brings Chivalric Code To Wide Open Spaces And The High Seas

Produced by Dan Baird, Ben Strano, Mike Aiken
Norfolk, VA -- Well-traveled Virginia troubadour Mike Aiken may well have been born in the wrong century. An inner sense of chivalry oozes from every track on
CAPTAINS & COWBOYS, his sixth studio album on Northwind Records, which issues April 22. As the title track says, "Save the babies, kiss the ladies, having drinks with my friends" is a code Mike lives by. Aiken also addresses global environmental issues, love, loss and personal freedom in this conceptualized
offering.

Aiken has drawn tales - and hope - from "trail riders, aging rodeo champs, sea captains, Rastafarians and outlaws on the lamb" and crafted a disc that draws the threads of these independent spirits together. This is the first effort on which
Aiken opted for outside production assistance, drawing upon the talents of Dan Baird (Georgia Satellites) and Ben Strano (Jack Sundrud/Poco). The result gives the listener a remarkably clear vision of Mike as an artist.

"Dan and Ben really 'got' the appeal that old silver screen heroes, singing cowboys and swashbuckling sailors have always held for me," Mike notes. "That gave me the freedom to focus on the songs," he adds. It also allowed him to "gel" with the other pickers on the project. Players like Dan Dugmore on pedal steel (James Taylor, Little Big Town), Tammy Rogers on fiddle and mandolin (Grammy nominated SteelDrivers), the multi-talented Michael Webb on accordion, bass, B3 (Poco) and Michael Grando on drums (Todd Snider, Chris Knight) left their comfort
zones behind and played fearlessly without a net. Aiken brought his signature acoustic, awesome electric slide and his rich baritone guitar to the mix.

With the warmth of Lightfoot, the earthiness of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the unerring timing of Billy Joe Shaver, Aiken's vocals are uninhibited on his own sweetly vibrant "Virginia" and Country Joe McDonald's poignant lament "Save The Whales." The title track crackles with a longing for the old West and the open sea, while the earth-shattering "Coal Train" (Mike Aiken, Larry Berwald) sadly outlines the destruction of our shrinking Appalachian mountains. "Get Down River" (Brian Henneman) highlights the challenges of living hand-in-hand with Mother Nature, while Aiken's "Bring Out The Bourbon" recalls late night communions with ex-pats found around the globe. Other writers contributing to the project include: Tim Buppert, Michael Burton, Austin Cunningham, Brad Davis and Steve Williams.

"There's not a song on this project that doesn't fit," Aiken explains. "The album was two years in the making. I'd written many tunes during that time but not many made it onto this record. They weren't bad, but the fit wasn't right," he adds. A writer of enormous depth, Mike knows whereof he speaks: he has lived on a sailboat for the past 20 years, sailed across oceans as a USCG-licensed captain, raised horses and made his living as a farrier. His inspirations and talent come together on this seminal CD that should move Mike to the forefront of the
Americana/Roots movement. So saddle up, put sail to the wind and enjoy this ride with him.

Mike Aiken featured in Sports Illustrated 's Top 40 Best Sports Songs
Singer/songwriter Mike Aiken's song Chesapeake chosen by Sports Illustrated

Norfolk, VA / PRBuzz / July 12, 2011 - - Mike Aiken, Norfolk-based Americana/country/roots artist on Northwind Records, was recently featured in a Sports Illustrated article about the top 40 sports songs of all time. In the July 4th issue, Greg Kelly ranked Aiken's song "Chesapeake" as number 33 on "The Ultimate Play List," a list of songs about sports chosen for their superior music and lyrics. Kelly acknowledges that there are a multitude of songs about sailing, but he also states, "nobody sings about the nautical life better than Aiken."

Aiken says, "I'm proud to be included on the list with such distinguished artists. I write from what I know and have experienced. The Chesapeake Bay is one of my favorite sailing grounds in the world. I am lucky to know her." Mike's music reaches into various genres of music, including country, Americana, roots, rock, calypso, and folk. As a seasoned sailor, his lyrics tell stories of life, love, and wanderlust against a maritime backdrop. "Chesapeake" is on Aiken's 2003 release, Getaway.

Aiken is signed to the Indie label Northwind Records. Northwind is proud of its working relationship with Mike Aiken; together they have amassed a remarkable list of career accomplishments, including multiple Top 30 singles on Indie Country, Euro-Americana, and Euro Indie Hot Disc charts (#1 single, "No Fishin' Pole"). Mike plans to include both original compositions and holiday standards; he has already asked his fans for their input on song selection. The forthcoming record is slotted for digital release in the holiday season of 2011.

Aiken is signed to the Indie label Northwind Records. This record will be Northwind's first holiday release. Since much of Mike Aiken's music revolves around the sea lyrically, fans may wonder if Christmas will be given a nautical or Caribbean twist for some of the cuts on the new album. "Well, I don't want to give too much away," Mike says, "like every good Christmas package you'll have to wait for the surprise inside. But I can tell you this... it will put you in the spirit!"
