Coal Train
'Coal Train' went down in one take on the floor! It was supposed to be a rehearsal but the energy just kept building. I looked across the studio at Dan Baird on acoustic guitar and he just had a wild **** grin on his face as he drove his old Gibson. We traded glances and I shoveled the coal to my Dano Baritone! We listened to the play back, laughed and said, “Man that's done!” It doesn't go down like that very often but when it does, it's really sweet.

Living on a boat in the Norfolk harbor, the amount of coal transport ships coming in high on their lines and leaving low and loaded for China is staggering. We are physically selling off the Appalachians one chunk at a time. This song came out of that and the fact that with GPS technology you can see the mountains “shrinking.”
