Andalusia 1919 (Nell Robinson Letter)
(This is a letter written by my grandmother Nell Robinson, age 19, to her beau and future husband, Sanders Cumbie, a wagoner in World War II.)

“Dear Sanders,

I didn’t write you before I left Brownville because I just knew you would sail in April; but when I got home, Miss Sudie said you had yet to start your journey.

I want to believe you are kidding about their not letting you come home. Maybe you’ve found you a young Frenchie lady with beautiful red lips and you are not caring about coming back.
But honestly, things are going on here just as usual. Not the war, nor even peace has disturbed us. Sometimes I just wish something would happen to make us forget our little ailments. Maybe if you would come and try those French kisses on Papa and Uncle Walter we could get up a good laugh and forget about these hard times for once.

We saw that some of your division was well on the way home and may be your time will be next. This I pray. We old maids are anxious for you boys to get back.

Sincerely, Nell Robinson”
