CHRISTMAS NEEDS LOVE TO BE CHRISTMAS
Songwriters: Steven McClintock & Tim James, McJames Music Inc. BMI
The story of the song...
In 1981... Tim James and I decided we wanted to write a song like Irving Berlin's White Christmas...one that would live forever.
So in JUNE of that year, in Irving style, we went to Catalina and wrote Christmas Needs Love To Be Christmas. We were very excite about it and decided to demo it. We wanted it to be for Anne Murray and had a good connection with Jim Ed Norman. My voice seemed too pop at the time, so we did the original demo with my father Don McClintock singing it. Made a single out of it and promoted to radio from August to mid December...getting SOME airplay.
We FINALLY got the meeting with Jim Ed in LA only to be told that Anne was only going to do Christmas covers...classics. So he passed. Leaving the office, Tim chucked the cassette into the trash can and we went to the elevator. Not happy campers. A guy comes out of the office, named Robbie Adcock and says to us...."I overheard the song and I really think it would be a good one for Andy Williams. He is looking for a new Christmas classic song." He took it to Andy and within a few weeks he had recorded it. They set up him to do Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin and others...but the biggest was the Bob Hope Christmas Special....and that was where it was debuted. The rest is history...
