Bacach Shíl’ Andaí
This is a nursery rhyme which is very common in the Gaeltacht areas of Co. Donegal. It refers to the Battle of Killala, fought on the 23rd of September, 1798, between the British forces and a small number of French soldiers and Irish rebels—it marked the last major defeat of the 1798 rebels. “Bacach Shíl Andaí” refers to the Irish beggar, “Bacach Irlandais”, who roamed the country in defeat after the battle.
