"Diary of a Redhead is not about me. It is about someone I knew a very long time ago who I admired a great deal when I was a young child. She was a flaming redhead - with hair as bright as the brightest orange. She was the kind of person who could walk into a room and light it up with her personality. But inside she had a great deal of heartache. She'd had a very difficult life, raised two sons by herself and ultimately died of breast cancer just when she had found the person she wanted to spend her life with. I cried when I wrote this song. And I cried when I recorded it. I knew it was the right take - on the first take."
