My mates and I were stuck 3 days in an 80 knot hurricane in the Bahamas. When the winds passed, we made our way into the shelter of a small bay of the island of Hopetown where many other ships with their masts shattered in half and their sails split to shreds were anchored. We stayed a few days to get our sloop into shape, then moved on. Later, I wrote the song as a tribute to the islands and people of the Caribbean.
