HARDHAT FOR A HALO (Single)
HARDHAT FOR A HALO
We gathered ‘round and said goodbye to ol’ man Jesse today. After a lifetime working in the mines, he finally just slipped away. On the table by his coffin at his request his hardhat lay. With a letter written in his hand, here’s what it had to say.
(chorus)
He said, “I’m trading this hardhat for a halo. I’m trading these ol’ dusty clothes for robes of snowy white. I’m trading these ol’ steel toe boots for a pair of golden slippers. And when you get to Glory come and see me by and by.
He said, “My back down here was stooped and bowed from working that low coal. But there’s high top up in Heaven and standing room for my soul. He said, “I crawled down here in these ol’ mines ‘til my knees were bloody and sore. Now the next time I fall on my knees I’ll be standing before my Lord.”
I made my preparation back in 1969. About 2am on the night shift in that number 7 mine. In my despair I cried out in prayer, my sins as black as coal. Then Jesus reached down thru that cold dark ground and He saved my troubled soul.
This hardhat you see before you kept me safe for all these years. Each day I found the darkness and it helped me face my fears. If you wonder ‘bout it’s secret, look what’s written inside. It says you’ll never walk in darkness, because Jesus is the light.
