Before I Leave Mexico
BEFORE I LEAVE MEXICO
written by Doug Moreland, ASCAP and Billy Applegate, BMI

Skirtin’ ‘round the edge of town to keep from being seen
There’s men lookin’ for me, they won’t let it be
I won’t run from any man, but I’ve got a long way to go
I need to see Maria before I leave Mexico

Before I leave Mexico I have to make amends
I don’t care how many men her daddy sends
They say I killed her brothers, an argument I cannot win
I need to see Maria before I see Texas again

Stayin’ in the shadows cast by the moonlight
If I can make it to her arms I know I can make it right
I need to prove my innocence, I’ve heard that she knows
I need to talk to Maria before I leave Mexico

Before I leave Mexico I have to make amends
I don’t care how many men her daddy sends
They say I killed her brothers, an argument I cannot win
I need to see Maria before I see Texas again

I step out of the shadows three feet from her back door
Feel the bullet pierce deep in my chest, I know it’s hell for sure
Choking on my last breath, I whisper soft and low
Tell Maria I didn’t kill her brothers before I leave this world

Before I leave Mexico I had to make amends
I didn’t care how many men her daddy sent
They say I killed her brothers, an argument I did not win
I needed to see Maria before I’d see Texas again
I didn’t see Maria, and I’ll never see Texas again
