MAKE HAY
Jadi Norris
IGO Records/Jumpin' Armadillo Records
4 stars (out of 5)
Jadi Norris has spent years on the road
honing his musical skill and style. His
debut CD, Make Hay, shows that he
has learned more than a thing or two
on the road. He has melded a diverse
group of songs with styles from
country, to southern rock, to honky
tonk, to 50's-influenced ballads to
create an album that is entertaining
and cohesive. While you know that
each song is being sung by Jadi and
none of them sound out of place, there
is no feeling of repetition on this
album.
Sometimes I get a little nervous when I
see that a debut album contains songs
written mostly by the artist. It can be
an indication that the album will not
be as strong as it should be. However, this is not he case with Jadi. He wrote or cowrote
11 of the 13 songs on the album, but they are all good, solid songs. Jadi has
obviously learned how to write and pick strong songs that stand on their own as well as
fit his voice nicely.
All of the songs on this album are well worth taking a listen. From the upbeat honky
tonk "Borrowed Time," to the 50's-influenced "Not Coming Back," to the rocking "Workin'
Man's Saturday Night," to the patriotic "Hail the American Solder," to the strong country
heart breaker "Just Learn to Close My Eyes," there is something for everyone on this
album.
Any song that can stop me in my tracks and make me listen is a strong song. "Not in
Love By Morning" is one of those songs. It is about a woman who realizes her relationship
with a married man is only robbing her of what she deserves. Jadi's vocals are strong and
vulnerable throughout the song. This song will touch many people's hearts and souls.
"She Needs Me" is another ballad excellently delivered by Jadi. It is a tribute to a woman
who loves and needs her man. He promised her the moon, but things haven't worked out
the way he planned, but she still needs him in the way that is evidence of a love that is
true. Again, Jadi's vocals are touching and draw you in with their truth and strength.
But Jadi isn't just about touching ballads. "Home is Where the Heart Is" is the exact
opposite with it's up-tempo kiss-off attitude! A man's wife has left him, saying that he
didn't give her what she needed. He feels that he's worked his butt off to meet her
expensive tastes. So, now, he's not so broken up about her leaving. The spoken part at
the end of the song is hysterical as he ticks off all the things he won't miss and all the
things he is going to do now that she's gone. This song is just pure fun!
In all, Make Hay is a strong debut album from a man who has honed his craft. The
album is fun, entertaining, and touching everything a person could ask for in one CD.
