Granny Lum Loy
When Cyclone Tracy flattened it all, we’re talking way back in 1974
The very next morning granny came down to her market garden, she was ready to work
in her short black pants and her giant hat
She’s been praying at the joss house now she knows where it’s at
So she’s clearing rubbish from those giant winds
and she’s digging soil ready to begin
Oh granny
I know you prayed every day
Oh granny
You had wisdom, enlightenment, you were tolerant… Granny Lum Loy
Adopted and brought here to dusty Darwin
so few Chinese women
so many rough men
Working in the restaurant ‘till you married Lum Loy
Mining camps for 15 years ‘till he died
Strong woman in Darwin planted 20 trees
The mangos you sold fulfilled the family’s needs
Daughter died in the Alice during the war
You came back to Darwin and planted some more
Sitting with Buddha
Contemplating… Meditating…
Oh granny
I know you prayed every day
Oh granny
You had wisdom, enlightenment, you were tolerant… Granny Lum Loy
Oh granny
I know you prayed every day
Oh granny
You had wisdom, enlightenment, you were tolerant… Granny Lum Loy
