4. THE DISTANCE OF MY FALL
The Distance of My Fall
(Inspired by the life and writing of Federico Garcia Lorca)

I was careful I had to be
I knew you would follow so I covered my footsteps
Who did you think you were, loving me?
Was it you, or was it me, or what we wanted to believe?

I will stand unforgiven, stand to the wall
Stand for all that is true at 5 o’clock in the afternoon
In the dust and dirt the bells will toll
Toll for the distance, the distance of my fall

I was careful but not careful enough
I believed that the night would hold until morning light
Who did I think I was, I knew exactly who and what I was
Was it us or them or what we chose to believe?

I will stand unforgiven, stand to the wall
Stand for all that is true at 5 o’clock in the afternoon
In the dust and dirt the bells will toll
Toll for the distance, the distance of my fall

The streets are boiling over brother against brother
Class and superstition gold as power absolute
Who will lead and who will follow
Who has the courage and who is the fool
Foolish enough to stand or fall, stand with our backs against the wall

I knew what I was doing I had made my decision
I chose not to be silent or particularly careful
I who loved you, I who am loved
I will not be silent, I will give you my blood

I stand unforgiven, stand to the wall
Stand for all that is true at 5 o’clock in the afternoon
In the dust and dirt the bells will toll
Toll for us all, for the distance of my fall I stand to the wall
Stand for all that is true at 5 o’clock in the afternoon
In the dust and the dirt the bells will toll
Toll for the distance, the distance of my fall
The distance of my fall . . .
