I Am Strong
Story behind the song...
Back in February of 2010 I made a trip with The Grascals to present a check to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis TN, raised by The MACC Festival held in Columbus, Ohio each year and little did I know my life would change forever with this visit. I was nervous and a bit scared from the moment I walked through the front doors of the hospital, afraid of what I might see. I knew that St. Jude was a Children’s Hospital where children are fighting the terrible disease of cancer.
Having my beautiful son Cole Train who is now 2 years old, thoughts were constantly running through my head as I watched young parents and their little boy or girl fighting for their lives. Many times I fought back tears and I just wanted to give them a hug for encouragement.
If you've never been to St. Jude, do yourself a favor and go see these great teams of doctors show their dedicated love and determination to find cures for this disease. And go see some of the strongest people (the children) you'll ever meet in your life! And if it’s still there, go see the wall of the alphabet where "I am Strong" was inspired. The Letter "S" stands for strong. I am more proud of this song than any other work I have created in my life and so thankful for getting to write it with my beautiful wife Susanne Mumpower-Johnson and our great friend Jenee Fleenor.
To the children of St. Jude and any child fighting cancer anywhere in this world, The Grascals love you and pray for you everyday! Thanks for showing us the real meaning of "Strong”!
