"The Kickin Grass Band has moved from the core of bluegrass to the heart of Americana and they've invited ALL their fans along for the ride."
- BARRY POSS, FOUNDER OF SUGAR HILL RECORDS
“The band picks with power and authority and the vocals are sung with passion and grace. And best of all along the way the band has forged its own unique sound. The original tunes are just stellar.”
- DAVE HIGGS, BLUEGRASS BREAKDOWN, NASHVILLE PUBLIC RADIO
“Lynda Dawson – lead singer, guitarist and songwriter – has a singular voice and a nifty way with words. She always manages to avoid clichés and yet find something universal to say in the process.”
- JEFF EASON, THE MOUNTAIN TIMES
Ten years in the making, Raleigh, NC based bluegrass and Americana group, the Kickin Grass Band, has made its mark on the roots music scene with strong voices, engaging musicianship and original songs that ride on the edge of tradition.
Their newest album Walk With Me is a close-to-home chronicle of heartbreaking loss and hopeful beginnings. The group delightfully stretches and builds each song beyond their firm footing in bluegrass, appealing to a broad roots music audience. To the joy of listeners and benefit of the songs, the band is not afraid to follow their muse down the complementary paths of Old-time, Americana and folk.
Half of the songs were penned by signature vocalist and main songwriter Lynda Dawson, with assists from newest members fiddle player Pattie Hopkins and banjo player Hank Smith. Vocals are passed back and forth between Dawson’s soaring lead on five of the tracks, Hopkins’s bluesy sound on two, bass player Patrick Walsh’s ethereal tenor on two, and mandolin player Jamie Dawson’s retro-tinted lead on one, with tasteful harmonic seasoning throughout. Even with shifts in instrumentation, arrangement and narration a distinctive Kickin Grass Band sound remains. Walk With Me threads together an expertly crafted package of rootsy Americana-style bluegrass.
