All Too Soon

My Johnny was raised among the fields and the trees
His hair was the color of the corn
His eyes were as blue as any pool in the land
And lost in that blue love was born
My handsome Johnny, he was not one to roam
He knew where his future would be
But the sands of the desert so far from his home
Have taken my true love from me

Bright was the morning but dark was the day
The message was brought to my door
That my lovely Johnny was lost in the fray
And never would I see him more
Now from the wellspring of my breaking heart
I pray that my lover finds rest
I will look for my Johnny where I know he will be
In the eyes of the babe at my breast

The path to the hilltop is a sharp, winding road
That we took so spritely every time
But now in the twilight and walking alone
I feel every step of the climb
Long, long and lonely will I stand in this place
And offer salt tears to the moon
Until comes a morning, puts a smile on my face
For my love who’s left me too soon
My Johnny who’s left all too soon
