Songs can develop from idea germs picked up in unexpected places. This one came in the form of the writings of two very different authors: a novella by William Faulkner and the dedication page of a contemporary bestseller. I always thought that Faulkner would have made a great bluegrass songwriter if he'd ever turned his pen to it. By the way, for this song Walter put down his banjo and picked up a guitar.
