Freight Train
Freight Train (Elizabeth Cotten)
I got to meet Elizabeth Cotton, the author of this song,
decades ago. I learned this delightful tune when I was
eight years old. (Back when there were dinosaurs!) Though
Sonny and Brownie have their own bluesier version, we stuck
closer to Elizabeth’s.
Freight train, freight train run so fast
Freight train, freight train run so fast
Please don't tell what train I'm on
And they won't know what route I've gone
When I die please bury me deep
right down on old Chestnut Street
So I can hear the number nine
As she goes rollin' by
When I'm dead and in my grave
no more good times will I crave
place a stone at my head and feet
tell'em all that I've gone to sleep
Freight train, freight train run so fast
Freight train, freight train run so fast
Please don't tell what train I'm on
And they won't know what route I've gone
