You Hurt Me All Over Again
8. YOU HURT ME ALL OVER AGAIN

Canadian fiddler and vocalist April Verch recorded a fine version of this song on her “Steal the Blue” record (2008), but we decided to record it so folks could hear the original concept. Dale Ann Bradley can make any harmony part sound angelic.

I don’t think about it much, at least not every day
I don’t use you as a crutch when things don’t go my way
I’ve learned to let it go, but healing sure comes slow
And after all this time, I guess I’m doing fine

But every now and then my fences all fall down
I remember I’d forgotten how it was with you around
I put it in the past with things that might have been
But every now and then, you hurt me all over again

I dropped by that little diner where we used to go unwind
And who should I run into? Old friends of yours and mine
They asked me how you were, I just smiled and said, “Ask her.”
I waved and watched them go, as if they didn’t know

That every now and then my fences all fall down
I remember I’d forgotten how it was with you around
I put it in the past with things that might have been
But every now and then, you hurt me all over again

I’m a tower of strength they say, leaning on this bar
When I think of where I’ve been, it’s really not that far

‘Cause every now and then my fences all fall down
I remember I’d forgotten how it was with you around
I put it in the past with things that might have been
But every now and then, you hurt me all over again
