Album Liner notes:

"A Fine Place to Start" began in 2000, though some of the songs were written even before then. I think the first was Rolling Blackout Blues; definitely the oddball of the collection being it’s a satire. The other songs developed over the course of a year or so, and quite honestly, as means to find my way through a “been there, done that” period of time. At the time, I was limited with what I could accomplish in the studio; and so I moved to completion feeling that most of the songs were left unfinished. By 2001, I released a CD of what is no doubt the first part of this now finally completed project.

The second half of this project began during the spring of 2014 and would not have been possible if not for the way the 2001 original tracks were mixed together. Luckily, there was a good amount of “space” remaining in the mastered tracks. This was important due to the fact that I did not have the separate tracks from the original recordings, only the final mixed and master CD to work with.

It has taken a long time for this project to finally arrive at completion. I am both happy and proud of where it now rests. My goal was to mix the 2014 tracks into the 2001 mastered album so that the large period of time that spans the two recording phases would not be apparent. I think I’ve succeeded and now I can finally sit back, enjoy, and know that it was indeed a Fine Place to Start. I hope that you do as well. - Rick

Long Bio:

Rick was born in Philadelphia, but was raised west of the city in the dairy and corn fields of eastern PA. He began playing music "by ear" on his mother's piano spending many hours playing and singing with records from artists such as The Everly Brothers, John Denver, Niel Diamond, Barry Manilow, Cat Stevens and others.

Through his teens and early adulthood, Rick listened to classic rock and acoustic rock from the 60's and 70's. His first concert was the Canadian band RUSH at the Philadelphia Spectrum in 1984. Other artists and bands he enjoyed during this period included Ozzy Osbourne, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Judas Priest, and others.

Rick played the Alto Saxophone starting in elementary school and continued with the instrument through his high school years.

Rick's guitar playing began in 1990 at age 21 when he "borrowed" his father's 70's era Sigma DR-1 acoustic dreadnought guitar. He took guitar lessons at the local music store and not long after bought his first electric guitar, a Fender Strat (American Standard).

Rick was introduced to the music of Stevie Ray Vaughn (who had just passed the month prior) by his guitar teacher. After a year of guitar lessons his teacher referred Rick to a friend for a brief period of instruction by American jazz guitarist and composer Pat Metheny.

After moving to the central coast of California in the mid 1990's, Rick's guitar playing shifted from Texas electric blues to acoustic guitar and Folk, Americana, and Bluegrass music. He started performing publicly at open-mic's in the Santa Cruz area in 1999 and in 2001, released his first album of original Americana songs. This album would later be re-mixed with additional vocal and instrumental tracks and re-released under a new title called "A Fine Place to Start".

Rick's newest album "White Turtle Dove" (released June 2015), introduces fans to some of Rick's contemporary Bluegrass originals, and is also available on APD at:
